ΣΚΟΠΟΣ ΚΑΙ ΦΙΛΟΣΟΦΙΑ:
Οι Μονάδες ΜΕΝΤΩΡ είναι κινητές αίθουσες διδασκαλίας όπου διοργανώνονται επιστημονικά προγράμματα εκπαίδευσης για παιδιά ηλικίας 6 - 14 χρονών, με σκοπό την πρόληψη της χρήσης εξαρτησιογόνων ουσιών. Ο σκοπός αυτός επιδιώκεται με τρεις στρατηγικές πρόληψης:
α) την παροχή γνώσεων και πληροφοριών
β) την απόκτηση δεξιοτήτων
γ) την ενίσχυση της αυτοεκτίμησης των παιδιών.
Οι Μονάδες είναι στελεχωμένες με προσωπικό του Υπουργείου Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού (εκπαιδευτές), το οποίο τυγχάνει ειδικής εκπαίδευσης των προγραμμάτων από το LifeEducation Centre της Βρετανίας.
Η τεχνολογία της Κινητής Μονάδας Εκπαίδευσης Ζωής τοποθετεί το δάσκαλο και το μαθητή σε ένα νέο περιβάλλον: Μια αίθουσα χωρίς καθίσματα όπου όλοι κάθονται στο χαλί, ίσοι μεταξύ τους, μια οροφή με φωτεινά άστρα, οπτικοαουστικά μέσα και ηλεκτρικά διαμορφώματα για τα διάφορα συστήματα και τις λειτουργίες του ανθρώπινου σώματος, παιγνίδια Harold -η καμηλοπάρδαλη - και άλλα. Όλα αυτά, οδηγούν στην ενεργό συμμετοχή των παιδιών στο πρόγραμμα και αποτελούν μια θετική και αξέχαστη για αυτά εμπειρία.
Τα μαθήματα των Κέντρων Εκπαίδευσης Ζωής ακολουθούν μια διαβαθμισμένη σειρά ώστε να αντιστοιχούν στη γνωστική και συναισθηματική ανάπτυξη των παιδιών και καταπιάνονται με θέματα που έχουν σχέση με την ηλικία στην οποία απευθύνονται:
• Φροντίδα του σώματος – καθαριότητα (Α΄ τάξη)
• Υγιεινή διατροφή (Β΄ τάξη)
• Έλεγχος των συναισθημάτων (Γ΄ τάξη)
• Προσωπικότητα (Δ΄ τάξη)
• Επιπτώσεις καπνίσματος και χρήσης αλκοόλ – Αποφάσεις (Ε΄ τάξη)
• Υγεία – Ναρκωτικά – Επιδράσεις των φίλων (Στ΄ τάξη)
ΙΣΤΟΡΙΚΟ:
Τα Κέντρα Εκπαίδευσης Ζωής (Κ.Ε.Ζ.) ιδρύθηκαν με γνώμονα τη θεμελιώδη αρχή ότι η Πρωτογενής Πρόληψη είναι ίσως το πιο ισχυρό όπλο στον αγώνα ενάντια στα ναρκωτικά.
Το πρώτο Κ.Ε.Ζ. ιδρύθηκε στην Αυστραλία το 1979. Σήμερα λειτουργούν Κινητές Μονάδες σε 14 χώρες: Αυστραλία, Βρετανία, Βέλγιο, Χονγκ Κονγκ, Νέα Ζηλανδία, Νέα Γουινέα, Σιγκαπούρη, Νότια Αφρική, Σουηδία, Ταϊλάνδη, Αμερική, Ουγγαρία, Φιλανδία και Κύπρο.
Η ιδέα για δημιουργία Κ.Ε.Ζ. και λειτουργία των κινητών Μονάδων Εκπαίδευσης στην Κύπρο ξεκίνησε από μέλη του Round Table Κύπρου, προσπάθεια που αγκαλιάστηκε από τις αδελφές λέσχες Ladies Circle και 41Club. Με τη συνεργασία του Αντιναρκωτικού Συνδέσμου αποφασίστηκε η οργάνωση παγκύπριων εκδηλώσεων για τη συγκέντρωση του αναγκαίου ποσού για αγορά 2 Μονάδων.
Τον Απρίλιο του 1996 διοργανώθηκε η πρώτη μεγάλη εκδήλωση με σύνθημα «Εμπνέω το παιδί για ζωή» που είχε σαν αποτέλεσμα την συλλογή ενός σεβαστού ποσού (140.000 ΛΚ) και την αγορά των 2 πρώτων Κινητών Μονάδων.
Στις 18 Φεβρουαρίου 1997 ολοκληρώθηκε η διαδικασία εγγραφής των « Κέντρων Εκπαίδευσης Ζωής » όπου συμμετέχουν εκπρόσωποι από την κάθε λέσχη, το Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού και τον Αντιναρκωτικό Σύνδεσμο.
Τον ίδιο χρόνο ξεκίνησε η εφαρμογή του Προγράμματος στη Μέση Εκπαίδευση, και διδάσκεται στη Α΄ Γυμνασίου, και το 1998 στη Δημοτική Εκπαίδευση, και διδάσκεται σε όλες τις τάξεις.
Το Υπουργείο έχει εντάξει επίσημα τα προγράμματα των Μονάδων στο γενικό πρόγραμμα “Αγωγής Υγείας”. Στα xρόνια της λειτουργίας των προγραμμάτων, η παραγωγική και άριστη συνεργασία της επιτροπής των Κ.Ε.Ζ. με τις εκπαιδεύτριες, τους υπεύθυνους επιθεωρητές Μέσης και Δημοτικής Εκπαίδευσης και τους εκάστοτε Υπουργούς Παιδείας, οδήγησε στην επίλυση πολλών προβλημάτων που κατά καιρούς παρουσιάζονταν. Με την αναγνώριση και την παραδοχή του σημαντικού έργου που επιτελείται μέσω αυτών των προγραμμάτων στην Προληπτική Αντιναρκωτική εκστρατεία, έχει δοθεί η διαβεβαίωση από το Υπουργείο Παιδείας ότι οι υφιστάμενες Μονάδες και όσες άλλες αγοραστούν θα αξιοποιούνται πλήρως.
Κατά καιρούς διοργανώνονται με πρωτοβουλία των ιδρυτικών λεσχών των Κ.Ε.Ζ. Κύπρου διάφορες εκδηλώσεις σε όλες τις πόλεις της Κύπρου, με απώτερο σκοπό τη συλλογή χρημάτων για την αγορά νέων Μονάδων. Οι φιλόδοξοι στόχοι της επιτροπής των Κέντρων Εκπαίδευσης Ζωής Κύπρου είναι να αποκτήσει η κάθε πόλη τις δικές της Μονάδες και τους δικούς της εκπαιδευτές.
Το Νοέμβριο του 2002 τα Κ.Ε.Ζ Κύπρου απέκτησαν και 3η μονάδα Μέντωρ, δωρεά της Αρχής Τηλεπικοινωνιών Κύπρου.
ΣΗΜΕΡΑ
Προκειμένου να μειωθεί το κόστος απόκτησης των μονάδων Μέντωρ, τα ΚΕΖ Κύπρου αποφάσισαν την κατασκευή στην Κύπρο. Μετά από τις κατάλληλες διαδικασίες, το 2004 άρχισε η κατασκευή 2 νέων μονάδων. Οι μονάδες αυτές παραχωρήθηκαν στο Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού η μεν πρώτη την άνοιξη του 2005 και η δεύτερη με την έναρξη του ακαδημαϊκού έτους 2005-2006.
Αξιοσημείωτο είναι το γεγονός ότι η μια από τις δύο μονάδες χρηματοδοτήθηκε με πρωτοβουλία της Πρώτης Κυρίας, Κυρίας Φωτεινής Παπαδοπούλου, μαζί με τις συζύγους των Αξιωματούχων του κράτους οι οποίες μάζεψαν χρήματα από διάφορους χορηγούς. Για το σκοπό αυτό μάλιστα έγινε σχετική εκδήλωση στο Προεδρικό Μέγαρο.
Η δεύτερη μονάδα κατασκευάστηκε με την ευγενική χρηματοδότηση από το ταμείο του 39ουΔιεθνούς Συνεδρίου Ladies Circle.
Με το τέλος του 2008 θα υπάρχουν συνολικά 14 μονάδες σε λειτουργία καλύπτοντας όλη την ελεύθερη Κύπρο με μονάδες σε κάθε επαρχία. Προκειμένου να είναι καλυμμένοι και οι δύο κύκλοι εκπαίδευσης σε όλη την ελεύθερη Κύπρο,
Τα ΚΕΖ είναι σε συνεχή και άριστη επικοινωνία και συνεργασία με το Υπουργείο Παιδείας και Πολιτισμού, γεγονός που ενισχύει το έργο που επιτελείται από κοινού.

Inspire Children for Life
The Mobile Units of Education of Life "MENTOR" are mobile rooms of teaching included in the programs of education of health of Ministry of Education and Culture. With visits from school to school they offer scientific education programs for children of age from 6-14 years learning them the face positively and their body, helping  them to resist in dangers, as the addiction in narcotics, the smoking, alcohol and other substances. Objective of Centres of Education of Life Cyprus it is the purchase of additional units for the cover of needs of all schools in Cyprus.

The Life Education Founder said:
"Each minute that we live is unique and original, one minute which never again exists… And what we learn in our children? We teach them that two and two makes four and that the capital of France is Paris. While we still can teach them: You know what you are? You are separate. You are unique. In all the years that passed no other child existed like you. And look at your body that beautiful it is. Your legs, your hands, fingers, and the way you move. You can it becomes want you want to be. You have the abilities for this. Yes, you are splendid. And as you grow you can hurt somebody who is exactly like you, separate? You should live each other. You should work, we should work in order to we make this world deserve for our children."
The Life Education Centres (L.E.C.) is a world Organisation that offers education programmes for the prevention of addictive forming substances. The L.E.C. was established in Australia in 1979 and today Mobile Units are in operation in 15 countries in all 5 continents.
In Cyprus, the idea for establishing L.E.C. and operating Mobile Education Units was initiated by members of the Round Table Club; the effort was embraced by the sister clubs Ladies’ Circle and 41Club. With the cooperation of the Antinarcotics Society it was decided to organise functions in the whole of Cyprus for raising the necessary amount of money for the purchase of 2 Units. Under the slogan «Inspire the child for life» the first big function was organised, which resulted in raising a respectable amount and the purchasing of the first 2 ‘‘Mentor’’ Mobile Units that were handed over to the Ministry of Education and Culture.
On the 18th of February 1997, the registration procedure of «Life Education Centres» was completed with the participation of representatives of Round Table, Ladies’ Circle, 41Club, Tangent Club, the Pancyprian Antinarcotics Society, as well as the Ministry of Education and Culture.
In the same year, the implementation of ‘Mentor’’ Programme was initiated in Secondary Education (taught in Grade A of Gymnasia) and in 1998 in Elementary Education (taught in all Grades).
The continuous securing of resources and the economic strengthening of the ‘‘Mentor’’ programme are the main work of the clubs Round Table, Ladies’ Circle, Tangent Club as well as of the Pancyprian Antinarcotics Society. This effort is decisively strengthened by the contribution of the Ministry of Education and Culture that undertakes everything that has to do with the implementation of the programme in schools and with the cooperation of L.E.C. proceeds with expanding the programme on an island wide basis.
Today the Cyprus L.E.C have 10 ‘‘Mentor’’ Mobile Units operating on a daily basis in the Elementary and Secondary Education schools. It is noted that the cost of each unit costs approximately €52,000.
The “Mentor” Life Education Mobile Units are mobile classrooms manned by specialist instructors and they are incorporated in the programs of Health Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture. By visiting every school in turn they offer scientific training programs to children between 6 to 14 years of age, teaching them to face positively their own selves and their body, helping them to acquire the necessary means so as to maintain the proper attitude towards everyday challenges that put to test their bodily, social and mental health, such as addiction to narcotics, smoking, alcohol and other addictive substances.
This aim is pursued by three prevention strategies: a) imparting knowledge and information, b) acquiring of skills and c) boosting the self-esteem of the children.
The Life Education Unit Technology places the teacher as well as the pupil in a new environment: A classroom without seats where everybody sits on the carpet, all being equal, a ceiling with luminous stars, audio visual aids, electric models for the various systems and functions of the human body, with games, Harold the giraffe and others. All these lead to the active participation of the pupils in the program and they constitute a positive and unforgettable experience for them.
"Mentor" programmes have a graded sequence, which follows the mental and sentimental development of children and they deal with subjects that are related with the age that they are addressed to.

· Health – Friends – Addictive substances (Grade F)
· Taking Decisions for older pupils
An ambitious aim of the Cyprus L.E.C is for the "Mentor" programme to be implemented thoroughly in all schools, a need which, as shown by the fast use of addictive substances in the island, is becoming all the more pressing.
